\nAllen Coté\, Benjamin Schaefer\, Calvin Turner\, Lisa Ridgely\, Nathan Kilen\, Quinten Farr and Sugar Ransom are some of the most multifac eted artists in Milwaukee and this particular group came together from all musical corners as ¡paLABra! to create a visceral take on the gospel of long-de ad Cuban composers.
\nThe sacred squall ¡paLABra! creates exists out side time and tempo – a sound that is both utterly revolutionary and compl etely commonplace. Howling guitar gets paired with the rhythm of the saint s and harmonies of the angels\, sung by hell’s choir\; ¡paLABra! creates a sound for the whole being: the head\, the heart and the hips. ¡paLABra!’s debut album will be unleashed on May Day and to herald its release\, WMSE snagged all the details straight from group founder and leader\, Allen Co té.

When the lead singer of
Rez Metal is a film that chronicles I Don’t Konform\, a metal band from the Navajo Nation\, and their experiences after being discovered by Metall ica producer Frederik Rasmussen\, who produces their album. The film is a raw look at the alarming suicide rates of young people in their community and how important metal has become to create a vital support system and up lift those who are suffering. The film also reveals some interesting inequ ities in the music business.

\n~From PBS. org:
\n“What is “rez metal”? Rez metal is a one-o f-a-kind sound that you don’t hear on the radio or much on YouTube or anyw here else but the rez. It’s very obvious\, very loud — a very distinctive sound. Some bands use that powwow rhythm and traditional songs and mix tha t into their metal songs. I personally haven’t done that. Others write abo ut our culture and heritage lyrically. The band Ethnic De Generation\, in the song “Bloodland\,” the singer talks Navajo during the bridge. And the band Testament\, in their song “Native Blood.” The lead singer is Native\, and in the video there is a tribal dance in the beginning. It’s really aw esome when bands combine the culture into the music.”

Tune into WMSE as Erin talks to Lafayette\, LA musician\, Renée Re ed about her recent release for Keeled Scales Records. Steeped in Cajun culture an d gothic and earthy folk\, Reed’s music is a peculiar trip to somewhere fa miliar. Modern folky shades of Nick Drake\, Jessica Pratt and even Elliott Smith (honing in on the simple setup of guitar + voice) meet echoes of th e culture she grew up with\, giving it a Cajun flair\, her famous family l ounging musically in the background: her great-uncle\, the folklorist Revo n Reed and grandfather\, Harry Trahan as well as her musician parents\, Li sa Trahan and Mitch Reed.
\nThe songs on Renée’s self-titled debut a lbum chronicle a three-year period. These are songs about unhealthy relati onships\, ancestral baggage and blessings\, seeing ghosts\, and daydreamin g about love. Renée describes her music as “dream-fi folk from the Cajun p rairies\,” and this album as “a whole document of me coming to terms with myself and embracing who I am without reserve.”

\nDark Psychic is a two-piece electroni c rock band from Milwaukee. Clark Rendall (vocals\, synths\, drum machine) and Nathan Greene (guitar) played together in several bands in the early 00’s and rejoined efforts after Rendall’s departure from and recent return to Milwaukee.
\nDark Psychic’s sound revives elements of the new wa ve and post-punk sounds of the 80s with pops of psychedelic garage rock an d grunge throwing some sonic curveballs. The duo’s debut release – Halluc ination – tells of disillusioned millennials and Gen Xer s navigating adult life in an economic and political wasteland amidst mult iple systemic crises. And while there is a dark\, cynical nature to much o f their material\, many songs hold a glimmer of hope.

Our guest for this round is Devils Teeth< /a>.
\nMilwaukee’s Devils Teeth play fun punk and garage rock dedica ted to the sleazy midnight movie marathons of their youth. \nThe Mavericks are true American originals\, heirs to the great songwriting traditions of Cuba and Miami\, of Nashville and San Antonio and Memphis. Now\, on their 30th anniversary as a band\, they’re back to remind the world why they’re so good.
\nAlthough the band’s most-recent\, 2020 release En Español’s 12 tracks are in Spanish\ , as the title suggests\, the collection represents a diversity of musical styles and cultural traditions\, from tender boleros to brassy mariachi t o reimagined Afro-Cuban classics. Seven of the tunes are familiar gems dra wn from the vast Latin American songbook\, while five are originals writte n or co-written by band leader\, Raúl Malo .
\nLike the band’s entir e body of music\, this one album cannot be boxed into a single category. T he songs are as diverse as Latin America itself\, and as cohesive as the i deal of the American melting pot. To season this rich musical paella\, The Mavericks add their signature country/rock/Tex-Mex flavors and a refreshi ng spontaneity to the mix.

Wanderer is adept at mixing the bygone and the modern\, m aking the years blur with a focus on interesting rhythms\, riffs\, voices and stories.
\nIn March of 2020\, Wanderer had an idea for a recordi ng experiment. He set up an 8-track cassette recorder and plugged in an ol d drum machine and a digital shruti box. The loose idea was to make a simp le electronic backing band that he could play along with. The result was u nexpectedly energizing. Boris The Sprinkler were formed the night of the 1992 ShopKo fireworks in Green Bay . Veterans of numerous local bands (including minor Beer City Records sens ations Suburban Mutilation)\, they opted to forgo most then-popular musica l routes — long-stale hardcore\, vaguely melodic emo-esque muttering\, dul l strummy plugged-in acoustic guitar crap — for the then highly-unpopular music they grew up playing: The punk rock of the late 70’s and early 80’s\ , albeit with a loony thrift-store goofball aesthetic. To the surprise of no one\, the shenanigans of 2020 AD extinguished the band’s plans for a st ring of dates in support of Vespa To Venus. But\, newly vaxed\, waxed\, an d with a belly full of grape juice\, Boris shall brave the rigors of I-43 to bring their Carnival of Spaz back to Milwaukee for the first time in al most two decades. Don your cheeseheads and ’80s new wave specs and come on out! P.S. The band enjoys socks\, soup\, and most polkas.

\n“Bringing a bri lliant songwriting spirit that focuses on melody and earnestness\, Conway’ s music is relatable to a wide audience beyond the roots world\,” No D epression Magazine praises Caley Conway for her intimately arresting voice and beautiful take on classic folk songwriting. \nCamden began in the la te 1990s after some high school friends moved to Milwaukee and began absor bing and growing with the burgeoning Midwestern emo scene. Following the r elease of their 2000 debut record\, Reel Time Canvas and a run of tours with indie icons like Death Cab For Cutie\, The Gloria Record and t he Promise Ring\, Camden quietly disbanded for 20 years.
\nThose in- between times saw members playing in the final incarnation of The Promise Ring\, Decibully and Eric & Magill among other projects. Fast-forward to 2 020\, isolating in place and reconnecting over Zoom saw Camden just as qui etly reinvigorate and begin to write their first songs in over two decades .
