\nTune into WMSE as Tom talks with composer\, vi olinist and vocalist Carla Kihlstedt about her song cycle\, ’26 Little Deaths’ that will be pr esented in Milwaukee in conjunction with Present Music.
\nPresent Music will close its 40th Season at the Jan Serr Studio on June 23rd with the world premiere of Carla Kihlstedt’s ’26 Little Deaths’. The song cycle is inspired by Edward Gorey’s darkly Victorian alphabet book “ The Gashlycrumb Tinies.” Published in 1963\, the book depicts the demise o f 26 children in a morbid satire of early children’s books.
\nCurren tly led by Eric Segnitz and David Bloom\, Present Music is a six-time winn er of ASCAP/Chamer Music America’s “Adventurous Programming” award. The en semble has worked with composers such as John Adams\, Henry Brant\, David Lang\, Caroline Shaw\, Ingram Marshall\, Missy Mazzoli\, and more.
\nCarla Kihlstedt is a composer\, violinist\, vocalist\, and multi-instrume ntalistwho is a founding member of Tin Hat Trio\, Sleepytime Gorilla Museu m\, The Book of Knots\, Causing a Tiger\, and Rabbit Rabbit (formed with h er husband and former Sleepytime Gorilla Museum drummer\, Matthias Bossi).
\nShe is a recognized classical composer who has performed with the International Contemporary Ensemble\, has worked occasionally on projects with Tom Waits\, John Zorn\, and Fred Frith\, and recorded numerous album s as a guest or session musician.

There will be a short se t of duo music from a recent project entitled “The Fate of Bones ” by Trueman and Ó Raghalllaigh.
\nAnd we explore facets of recent work from other Nordic countries:
\nfrom Norway: Kj ell Habbestad’s “Quattro Stazioni“\, based upon a traditional tun e which inspired “wild dancing” to a Hardanger fiddle’s ‘troll-tuning’.
\nfrom Iceland: Johann Johannsson’s “Flight from the Cit y“\, a contemplative work with themes of change\, mutability\, death\ , rebirth\, and the elusive nature of beauty.
\nfrom Sweden : Emilia Amper’s infectious “Spelpuma“\, featuring a came o by Present Music favorite Carla Kihlstedt as N yckelharpa soloist!
\nThis concert is performed in conjunct ion with MAM’s exhibition\, Scandinavian Design and the United States\, 18 90-1980. In-person PM ticket holders also receive access to the Milwau kee Art Museum galleries the day of the performance.

This concert feat ures two World Premieres. ‘Cellist and composer Paul Wiancko of the prestigious Kronos Quartet has written a brand new work for Pre sent Music\, and will perform some of his other compositions\, including A merican Haiku\, When the Night\, and Closed Universe. Pamela Z performs her solo works for voice and an array of electronics\, and contributes another World Premiere to the program\, Raise\, a stirring tri bute to the people who raised us\, written for ‘cellist Nick Photi nos (founding member of 8th Blackbird) and three additional celli sts\, plus voice samples and multi-media. Is the plural of cello “cellos” or “celli”? We say Cello Cello!
