\nZach Pietrini ’s Midwestern\, indie americana songwriting aesthetic is the sonic embodim ent of a well-worn denim jacket. At the forefront of the Americana resurge nce\, Pietrini—lead vocalist and guitarist for his namesake band—takes an everyman’s approach to the genre with a knack for honest storytelling and a wistfulness that comes across in both the music and lyrics. The band tak es its cues from Tom Petty\, Bruce Springsteen\, and David Ramirez\, reint erpreting and rejuvenating American roots styles through a contemporary le ns. Pietrini’s songs “situate him at the confluence of all that an urban M illennial audience finds relatable” (Milwaukee Magazine)\, performing old- soul themes of ennui\, regret\, disappointment\, and nostalgia with a mode rn twist.
\nPietrini came up on the Chicago music scene before movin g to Milwaukee\, where he honed his signature “foot-tapping and pensive st eel-guitar-driven” style (Milwaukee Magazine)\, making regular appearances at Summerfest\, Mile of Music\, Bastille Days\, and other festivals. The band has also toured prolifically throughout the United States\, including opening for Huey Lewis and the News (5\,000 in attendance) and playing SX SW\, returning home often to play at local venues like Anodyne and Colecti vo Backroom as well as house shows in living rooms around Milwaukee.
\nPietrini’s dynamic live performances are intimate\, yet high-energy\, a nd his “beguiling friendliness” (88Nine)\, “nearly confounding” versatilit y (Shepherd Express)\, and laid-back stage presence bring a very Wisconsin sense of Gemütlichkeit to his shows. Voted Best Live Act in Milwaukee by Milwaukee Magazine and regularly in the running for Best Band in Milwaukee by 88Nine\, The Zach Pietrini Band is preparing for its 9th release in 20 22- Rock & Roll is Dead\, and will be hitting the road late September.

WMSE Local/Li
ve returns to the studio with a special performance and interview with
Songwriter Kat Wodtke leads Andrew Koenig and Nick Lang (Ryan Necci & the Buffalo Gospel)\, along with Samual Odin (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades)\, on a haunting journey of wide-open spaces a nd tight spots\, each song blistering with heart and grit. With a penchant for the theatrical\, Wodtke’s songs weave tall and not-so-tall tales of m ountain manhunts\, doomed honeymoons\, stalled engines\, and gravel roads into an experience as captivating as the landscapes she’s traveled. Her lo ngtime love affair with classic country\, folk\, Americana\, R&B\, and pun k music braids each into Long Mama’s singular sound.
\nWodtke grew u p in the Milwaukee area\, raised by two radical\, musician-turned-teacher parents. Often left to wander through the stacks of People’s Books as a ki d\, she discovered a love of reading – devouring everything from Carson Mc Cullers and Ralph Ellison to Sam Shepard and Tu Fu. In the basements and a ttics of Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood\, a gangly teenaged Wodtke was captivated by scrappy DIY bands that defied categorization and carved the ir own paths. Wodtke eventually moved to Minneapolis where she waited tabl es and immersed herself in the mercurial Twin Cities music scene. She trav eled to Alaska for seasonal jobs\, living in a small\, secluded cabin. All the while\, Wodtke observed and wrote\, studying the curious characters w ho always seemed to hang their hats in her unsettled heart\, whether they paid rent there or not.
\nWith years of drifting in her rearview mir ror\, Wodtke made her way back home to Riverwest. After the death of a clo se friend in 2018\, she struggled to make music. It took time – and a heap of patience and tenderness from friends and family – for her to pick up a guitar again. When she finally did\, music became a raft – or maybe more like a submarine – through the strange wilderness of heartache and grief\, loneliness and love\, risk and abandon. With a growing collection of orig inal songs and buoyed confidence\, Wodtke coined the name Long Mama (after a prickly\, shade-loving cactus) and teamed up with guitarist Andrew Koen ig and drummer Nick Lang\, a pair whose live chemistry adds glint and shad ow to Wodtke’s musical vistas. Upright bass ace Samual Odin came aboard so on after\, along with frequent collaborator Eva Nimmer\, whose backing voc als blend so elegantly with Wodtke’s that one could mistake them for blood harmonies.
\nPoor Pretender\, Long Mama’s debut album out October 2 8\, was engineered by Erik Koskinen and recorded live over a long\, snowy weekend in small-town Minnesota. The album showcases the band’s particular ability to conjure the beautiful in the broken\, the silver in the ore. S himmering below the surface of each song is Wodtke’s lived insight into ou r human faults and fissures: the moments in life when we can slip and lose our footing…or claw our way out\, better people on the other side of the canyon.
