Inspired by writer-director Cameron Crowe’s real life experiences as a teen rock journalist, ALMOST FAMOUS is an ode to ’70s rock ‘n’ roll that’s loving and nostalgic in the best ways possible, and certainly was one of the best movies of 2000 — and one that’s actually aged very well almost two decades on. Sure, it teeters a bit on the schmaltzy side but there’s just so much about this movie that is right on. Like what? Well, there’s Stillwater, the film’s fictional band, a set of hazy, hirsute ’70s heroes-on-the-rise who are probably the realist movie band ever. There’s the soundtrack: The Who, Skynard, Simon & Garfunkel, and of course Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” (featured in the film’s schmaltziest yet most memorable and moving scene). And there’s the characters, all of whom happen to be fleshed out real people instead of 2D rock stereotypes. Oh, and then there’s the cast. It’s a veritable who’s who of talented, likable folks, like heavy hitters Frances McDormand and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, then-newcomer Patrick Fugit, the always likable Billy Crudup, and Jason Lee before his name was Earl. The film also probably launched Kate Hudson into romcom superstardom; but hey, it also was one of the first to bring Zooey Deschanel to the world’s attention too.
