Highlight of the Week!
Twenty years after the release of their classic The Trinity Sessions, their first album to see widespread release, the Cowboy Junkies' following is as strong as ever. With a new record released earlier this year (At the End of Paths Taken) and the forthcoming Trinity Revisted, a 20th Anniversary celebration with guests Ryan Adams, Vic Chesnutt, and Natalie Merchant, the band is looking forward while acknowledging the superb catalog of songs they've assembled throughout their career. I guess what we're saying is, now might be the perfect time to catch them live. And as luck would have it, Cowboy Junkies will be visiting the Turner Hall Ballroom this Thursday, November 29th at 8PM. Tickets are on sale now for this show which features cabaret seating, so you can sit back and enjoy the laid-back beautiful music of the Cowboy Junkies' evening-length performance.
The Knitters
Credited as being instrumental in the alternative-country movement of the ‘90's, The Knitters began as the side-project of X's John Doe, Exene Cervenka, and DJ Bonebreak, with The Blasters' Dave Alvin, and upright bassist Jonny Ray Bartel, in the ‘80's. They wanted to have some fun with country music, and this part-time band received such high acclaim and such a following that they're still around more than twenty years later, touring on the heels of their 2005 record, The Modern Sounds of The Knitters. Come on out to see the original lineup this Saturday night, December 1st, at Turner Hall Ballroom, where you'll see some original Knitters tracks, re-workings of X songs, covers of country standards, and maybe a few surprises. Tickets to this all-ages show are twenty bucks, and are going fast.
TEXAR
And because variety is the spice of life, WMSE welcomes TEXAR to Hotcakes Gallery on Wednesday, November 28th, with special guests Karl Paloucek and Vertonen. TEXAR is an experimental rock band from Minneapolis that uses sampling and free improv to expand the rock vocabulary. And while he's now living in Chicago, you may recognize Karl Paloucek from his Milwaukee days as a member of industrial outfits, Shrilltower and Impact Test. See them live at Hotcakes Gallery, 3379 N Pierce Street, this Wednesday night at 7PM. Admission is just five dollars for the general public, three dollars for students. The Grohmann Museum
Captured on canvas and cast in bronze, workers of all kinds — from the last 400 years — are on display at the new Grohmann Museum, a work of art in itself, located at State and Broadway on the MSOE campus. See Milwaukee's newest attraction for FREE this Saturday, December 1st, from 1 to 4 p.m. Revisit jobs of yesteryear like wheelwright and seaweed gatherer or take an artistic look at workers today, such as doctors, miners and construction workers. Live on WMSE This Week!
This week's guest on Local/Live is Turpentine, who – like all other guests on Local/Live – will be performing a full set live on the air from the WMSE studios on a Tuesday night. So tune in tonight at 8PM to hear the Milwaukee five-piece, and if you like how it sounds, well then you can just go ahead and see them live at Points East Pub this Saturday night. Here's what Brian Barney had to say about them in Shepherd-Express: "Lo-fi and hypnotic, the band could be described as a modern day Doors. Lead lines that whine around well-placed sundry percussion and droning vocals make for music that is seductive and sometimes enthralling. At its core, Turpentine is rock, yet like many of the 70's bands that have obviously influenced them, there is a touch of vaudeville here...."
