Gringo Star Brings Classic Pop-Rock Back to the Mad Planet This Thursday

Gringo Star might raise eyebrows by their name, alone, at first glance — are they or aren’t they trying to be funny? This initial name  impression tends to fade after hearing the band’s earnest and catchy pop tunes. They definitely know how to have fun, but it’s obvious that Gringo Star is a solid pop machine with  just enough of an edge to link them up with the classic pop-rock of the Kinks and the Monkees, the blues-rock of the Stones and current artists such as Springsteen and Petty.

The quartet of Peter Furgiuele, Nicholas Furgiuele, Pete DeLorenzo and Chris Kaufman are multi-instrumentalists, hopping from bass, guitar and drums with ease. Vocal harmonies seal the deal on the band’s catchiness overload, and their 2008 release All Y’all encompasses all this perfectly. Their appearance this Thursday at Mad Planet will mark their third in Milwaukee  in less than a year — the Atlantans know they’ve got an appreciative home-away-from-home in Milwaukee.

Gringo Star will play the Mad Planet (533 E. Center St) along with Larry and His Flaskand The Midwest Beat. 9 p.m. 21+
