Jay Ryan Tonight at the Sugar Maple and Live, On WMSE Today

POSTED:: November 12, 2009

FILED UNDER:: General, Interviews

Chicago artist/musician [Dianogah] Jay Ryan’s silkscreen print shop The Bird Machine churns out poster magickry as though it were the most natural thing in the world.  Storybook scenes, odd animals and creatures peep out of the corners of posterboard etched with the names of notable indie bands such as Death Cab for Cutie,Andrew BirdMudhoney, the Sea and CakeLow and Built to Spill make Ryan’s work both eye-catching and dream-inducing. Milwaukee can view some of this magickry as Ryan pays a visit to Milwaukee at the Sugar Maple tonight to release his brand-new, collective poster book, Animals and Objects.

Ryan will share his 144-page  book of posters with Milwaukee at the Sugar Maple (441 E. Lincoln) at 7 p.m. His work documents a memorable chunk of the indie scene through posters dating from 2005 – 2008. Added into the mix of pages is an introduction by Andrew Bird and musings on Ryan’s work by Chicago stand-out novelist Joe Meno [Hairstyles of the Damned].

Ryan will give the full details of tonight’s event and his years spent as a screenprinter on Tom Wanderer’s show today. Milwaukee artist Tom Stack will be our guest interviewer for the afternoon. Tune in! 4:30 p.m. 91.7 FM, WMSE/WMSE.org. It’ll be artist versus artist, picking each others’ artistic brains. Stop by the Sugar Maple tonight to meet Ryan, in-person, and snag your own copy of Animals and Objects.
