With a gravely grasp on folk vocals much like Dylan, himself, Bostonian Chris Smither takes his cues from the range of Mississippi John Hurt and Randy Newman. Smithers’ best-known songs “I Feel the Same” and “Love You Like a Man” have both been covered by Bonnie Raitt.
Raised in New Orleans, Smither moved to Boston in the 60′s to pursue music after a stint at college as an anthropology major. In the early 70′s Smither released his first albums on the Poppy record label (I’m a Stranger Too and Don’t Drag it On). Continous recording and touring through variou festivals has brought Smither much recognition in folk and blues circles. His latest release, Time Stands Still features some of his best material to date, and Smither continues to tour, making a stop at Shank Hall tonight for an 8 p.m. show.
Before Smither takes on Shank Hall, he will perform a live set at the WMSE studios at 3:15 p.m. today. Tune in and listen online at WMSE.org or at 91.7 FM on your radio dial.
