Mashing it Up With the Hood Internet

The way of the mash-up is something that Milwaukee is familiar with judging by the huge turnout for the in-the-limelight, one-man-show of Girl Talk’s 2008 election night gala. The crowd not only came and saw, they participated in Girl Talk’s high energy mixing, hovering and dancing over and around the skinny  kid in the sweatband as he combined Metallica with Missy Elliott.

Fast forward to about a year later, and Milwaukee is in for another such performance this Saturday. This time around, the masher-up-ers are duo Steve Reidell and Aaron Brink, aka, the ‘Hood Internet’, two Chicagoans who ably combine Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” with Department of Eagles’ “No One Does it Like You” for the tongue in cheek creation of “No One Womanizes Like You”. Likewise, the Beastie Boys “Rump Shaker” gets the same treatment with an addition from indie kids Matt & Kim’s “Good Old Fashioned Nightmare” to produce ”Good Ol Fashion Rump Shaker”.

Combining current indie-geek favorites with rap and mainstream pop beats seems a little odd, and maybe a bit pretentious, but the end result is winningly catchy. The fun marriage of songtitles very much demonstrates that Hood Internet is not planning on taking any of their creations completely seriously anytime soon, either.

On Saturday, WMSE and Muzzle of Bees is proud to welcome the Hood Internet to the MSOE Campus at the Todd Wehr Auditorium (1047 N. Broadway) at 9:30 p.m. for a special performance along with WMSE DJ Dori Zori spinning in between the mash-ups. For more information, visit WMSE.org.
