Get to Know Your WMSE DJ Profile
How do you spend your days and nights when not hosting your radio show?
By day, my paid job is as an interior designer for a local architecture office. At night, it depends on the day…sometimes metal casting, sometimes Irish dance, sometimes a crazy art and/or craft, but always rock ‘n roll.
Do you remember what band, album or song took you from being a casual music listener to a passionate music lover?
There were a few; starting at four years old, The Archies’ “Sugar Sugar” on my little red and white checkered record player. I’m not even sure where that record surfaced from. Probably my mom. Seeing Alice Cooper on The Muppet Show about a year later was entertaining for me. About a year after that (I think we’re at 1979, now), I heard Gary Numan’s “Cars” at the roller skating rink. I couldn’t get it out of my head. That same year, sitting in the backseat of my parents’ car, hearing the radio blasting from the car next to us, was none other than “Voices” by Cheap Trick. I realized at this point, there was more out there than disco (thank God). After that, I started paying more attention to music, especially on television. I have to thank my parents for letting me stay up late on Saturday nights to watch SNL with them. This is where I first saw Blondie, Elvis Costello, Billy Idol, Squeeze, etc. Well, you know what comes next…MTV (back when they actually showed music videos!)! That was it…hooked for life (on music, not MTV!).
Is there a memory associated with that experience?
When I was playing that Archies record, I guess I was playing it very loudly. My mom came in my room and told me I was going to go deaf. I can still hear, luckily.
What band have you heard or discovered in the past six months that reminded you why you want to continue being a WMSE DJ?
The Jim Jones Revue. Everything I love about rock ‘n roll right there. Perfection.
Who is your favorite non-you WMSE DJ and why?
Many. Depends on the day, depends on my mood. I’m always learning something new from the other WMSE DJs. They never cease to amaze me.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
More tolerant of people who say they listen to ‘whatever is on the radio’ (non-WMSE). I pity the fools.
