A Trip to Bandcamp With: Whips

Whips play rock music founded on a deep history of time spent in Milwaukee bands (and otherwise), both old and new. Ashley (Chapman) Smith (Red Knife Lottery), Christian Hansen (Hot Coffin), Andrew Mrotek (Last Place Champs, The Academy Is…), Tyler Chicorel (Call Me Lightning, Space Raft) made their “Year One” debut release a hard-hitter, trading cues from both the loud, interlaced guitars of Hot Coffin and the trademark intense + punchy vocals from Smith. Vitriol, superstition and moralistic turmoil all swirl around the brooding five-track EP that retains a spirit of triumph even with the heavy thinking the lyrics do.

Whips’ first show last summer was opening for …And You Will Knows Us By The Trail Of Dead and since, has played with an enviable lineup of bands including Ume, Obits and Maritime. Year One might have been a debut release, but it’s apparent that from the songwriting, sound and shows, Whips has only yet to impress further as it barrels its way to whatever’s next.

Listen to Whips’ Year One by clicking the above image or band name and tune in to The Shape Of Rock on Tuesday, January 28th at 7am to listen to an interview with Whips’ Ashley Smith as she talks music and gets ready to play at Burnhearts’ upcoming winter festival, Mitten Fest.
