Vampire Weekend’s Contra Listening Party

Well, the votes are in, and critics are loving Vampire Weekend’s release, Contra, set for release on January 12th. The NYC band that has fashioned pop catchiness from mining the earlier wrought African lines drawn by Paul Simon, released their first, self-titled disc just shy of two years ago, and critics, college radio and mainstream radio has fallen in love with the worldly but sweet qualities of ‘dorm room’ pop that a group of New York students have aptly created.

Tonight, at Burnhearts (2599 S. Logan), listen to Contra before it hits the shelves as Burnhearts, WMSE and Muzzle of Bees hit the ‘play’ button and let it go in its entirety for Vampire Weekend fans to enjoy. The listening starts at 8 p.m. for an album that is already being called a superior to it’s predecessor. Rolling Stone has said of Contra “if Vampire Weekend was RushmoreContra is their Royal Tenenbaums: brainy, confident and generally awesome. Where much of the first album’s charm was conceptual…here the band has put on some muscle,” and the BBC calls it “‘beguiling’” and a “thoroughly grown-up record”. Listen for yourself.
