Made during his brief foray into non-horror pictures in the mid ’80s (and coming right off of the heels of STARMAN), BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA remains John Carpenter’s most immersive venture into the classic, swashbuckling thrills of the vintage Republic serials – albeit told through Carpenter’s off-kilter lens.
Everyday truck worker Jack Burton (the incomparable Kurt Russell) and his genius/best friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) run into trouble upon trying to pick up the latter’s green-eyed fiancé. One botched kidnapping and a car chase later, Jack and Wang Chi find themselves deep inside San Francisco’s historic Chinatown district and face-to-face with a few crazy monsters, a few “Lords of Death” or two, and an evil sorcerer who’s last gasp at humanity happens to be a woman with green eyes. While not recieving much respect upon its initial release over 35 years ago, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA has attracted a massive following thanks to its perfectly directed ensemble and its askew sense of humor. And we haven’t even got into the classic soundtrack performed by Carpenter himself!
