Nares: Moves is the first retrospective on the contemporary New York-based artist James Nares (b. 1953) and reveals a significant career bringing motion into the spotlight. The exhibition is organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum and will premiere June 14 to October 6, 2019. In addition to being the first retrospective for Nares, it is also the first to explore in depth the artist’s films as central to his artistic practice. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue celebrate the key projects of this prolific, perpetual inventor and establish Nares as an important contemporary artist.

“Fret Rattles are classic garage-punk lifers, taking years of punk/metal/garage experience and wielding it like a weapon.” – Ali Jaafar (Ecstattic Studio)

“A buzzing, Detroit via Minneapolis slab of high octane scuzz, unrelenting greased up rawk, ratchet fried and oil splattered, this aint for the faint of heart”. – Outhouse Moon

in-studio performance: The Beths (Carpark Records)
Jun 28 @ 2:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Tune into Zero Hour on WMSE to hear a performance from Auckland, New Zealand band, The Beths before they play Summerfest at 5:30pm…

“In the past, New Zealand indie-rock bands have typically been credited for possessing a distinctively jangly, drone-flecked sound dating back to the collegiate “Dunedin sound” established by 1980s-and-90s indie bands like the Clean and the Chills. You can hear a little bit of that legacy carried on in Future Me Hates Me—especially on “Uptown Girl,” which marries the soft charge of Dunedin classics like the Chills’ “I Love My Leather Jacket” with the melodic tang of Vancouver kindred spirits and Flying Nun signees the Courtneys. Otherwise, the Beths’ reference points aren’t bound to geographical placement; Glasgow indie-pop heroes Camera Obscura are frequently recalled, particularly in Stokes’ occasional vocal resemblance to that band’s frontperson Tracyanne Campbell, as well as the passionate burn of more mature strains of emo and pop-punk.” ~Pitchfork

Tune into WMSE to listen in on what is sure to be an awesome set from The Beths – if you loved Future Me Hates Me, you definitely don’t want to miss out! WMSE.org to stream world-wide or 91.7 FM on your radio dial in Milwaukee.

12th Annual Burnhearts/Pabst Street Party @ Burnhearts
Jun 29 @ 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Via Milwaukee Record :
Since opening in 2007, Burnhearts has slowly-but-steadily transformed into one of Milwaukee’s premier beer bars. Along the way, the Bay View lounge’s owners have shown customers they like to party. Beyond Mitten Fest (which has pretty much garnered local holiday status by this point) and Punk House Keggers, Burnhearts also partners with Pabst Blue Ribbon every summer for a day-long block party on a parcel of concrete outside the bar’s digs at the corner of Potter and Logan avenues.

The fun and fancy-free celebration of music, food, crafts, and a beloved cheap beer locals have come to know as “Burnhearts/Pabst Street Party” will celebrate its 12th anniversary this summer. On Saturday, June 29, the party will rage on with an eclectic mix of six local acts. Milwaukee Record—an official media sponsor of the event—is proud to announce the lineup for the 12th annual Burnhearts/Pabst Street Party, taking place outside the bar from noon to 8 p.m. Here’s who will play (listed headliner to opener).

Immortal Girlfriend
Shle Berry
Fuzzysurf
L’Resorts
Marielle Allschwang & The Visitations
SistaStrings

The Bay View block party will also include introductions from WMSE and between-set DJing by Why B. There will be food from a variety of local vendors available on-site as well. As always, Cortney Heimerl has curated a group of Milwaukee makers to sell crafts. Beyond the full bar selection Burnhearts will offer patrons inside, attendees can purchase Korbel Brandy Slush and, of course, Pabst Blue Ribbon outside. It’s going to be awesome. We’ll see you there, Milwaukee!

Local/Live: July 2 – Valerie Lighthart
Jul 2 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

With Midwestern warmth, Milwaukee’s Valerie Lighthart delivers her take on folk pop, adding depth with classical and electronic elements. Although upbeat, there is something undeniably dark on the perimeter of Lighthart’s lively melodies, unveiling private moments tinged with the melancholy of intimate vulnerability. Her single, “I’ll Be Damned” is filled with equal parts frustration and trepidation, its angsty lyrics swathed in heavy beats, peppy acoustic guitars and whistling – it’s a trick of the light in the best way.

Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, July 2nd for a live set from Valerie Lighthart the day before she plays SummerfestWMSE.org to stream live or in the archives or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour.

Local/Live on WMSE is sponsored by Club Garibaldi’s.

King Myles of the Hiii Tribe collective on Fresh & Direct Radio @ WMSE
Jul 2 @ 10:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Milwaukee artist, King Myles of the Hiii Tribe collective, has just released his newest single off of his album “Horzons,” entitled “Remedy.”

Myles is an American experimental hip hop artist endeared for his emotionally transparent vocal approach accompanied by head spinning lyricism. Frequently finding a way to color outside the lines, acoustic guitar, alto saxophone, keyboards and even the occasional glass bottle/drumstick combo have all been showcased as part of his organically soulful sound.
