West African sounds with intricate rhythms from the Sahel and Mossi and upbeat Afropop get a little electronic treatment through Burkina Electric, a group hailing from OuagadougouBurkina Faso. Burkina Electric will play Milwaukee at the Turner Hall Ballroom this Saturday. The group employs German (Dusseldorf) electronic guru Kurt Dahlke and percussionist Lukas Ligeti to add unique elements to the traditional African foundation provided by Wende K. Blass on guitar and Maii Lingani on vocals. Burkina Electric’s music wouldn’t be half as magical without its dancers, Idrissa Kafando and Hugues Zoko;  it’s nearly impossible to not dance along (see video, below).

The New York Times has called Burkina Electric an “irresistible brew of West African music and electronic” and avant garde genius Steven Reich describes them as “hot, intelligent and musical”. Their music has been remixed by DJs such as DJ Spooky, Paul de Jong of The Books and Rupert Huber of Tosca. Vocalist Lingani sings in More, Dioula, Bissa and French, helping to create a musical atmosphere that is uplifting, enlightening and energizing, all at once.

Present Music is proud to present Burkina Electric at the Turner Hall Ballroom (1032 N. 4th) tomorrow, February 6th for a 7:30 p.m. show.
