Get to Know Your WMSE DJ Profile

How do you spend your days and nights when not hosting your radio show?

My job as a biomedical technician keeps me very busy during the day. Evenings and weekends are spent relaxing/listening to music/watching films/socializing in general. I try to find any excuse to ride my motorcycle when the weather isn’t too brutal. Also, I have a fixer-upper home that has perpetual DIY projects. I recently got into fixing old battery operated mechanical toys, still collect tiki mugs and all kinds of records when I can. In my Bay View neighborhood, I’ve got a great circle of friends and try my best to keep up with them.

Do you remember what band, album or song took you from being a casual music listener to a passionate music lover?

In the early 70′s, my stepbrother was an overnight DJ for WTOS (a Milwaukee FM station which is now WXSS). He’d bring records home to preview by Spirit, Hendrix, Savoy Brown, Led Zeppelin and others who weren’t really heard on many radio stations back then. His shift was really late so I never got to hear his show, but I did listen to all the albums he’d bring home. I was eleven years old.  It was like a whole new world of music. As I got older I always gravitated to bands that were different and had some swagger. Probably why I got into punk and garage music.

Is there a memory associated with that experience?

(see above)

What band have you heard or discovered in the past six months that reminded you why you want to continue being a WMSE DJ?

I’m always being reminded on a consistent basis. Local bands like Burning SonsRust Belt DemonsRamma Lamma…Keith Morris still recording stuff with OFF! as well as touring…lately I’ve been liking the new Mean Jeans album and look forward to Police TeethJJ & the Real Jerks and Turbonegro’s new albums to be released.

Who is your favorite non-you WMSE DJ and why?

I’ve always said that WMSE DJ’s are not professional DJ’s but music lovers. Any DJ bringing that to the table is a favorite in my eyes (and ears).  But if I’m namin’ names it’d be Paul Host (one of the first voices I’ve heard at WMSE). I also like MartyTom WandererVon Munz, Jonny Z, Dietrich, The Pit (which I hear on the way to work every Friday). Andy does a cool show in my old Friday time slot, which I confess I kind of miss. I had that slot for seventeen years!

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A motorcycle/vintage toy mechanic, living a life of sweet simplicity and having a couple beers on occasion.
