WMSE’s Big Band Grandstand returns to the Turner Hall Ballroom on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. Now in its 8th year, this event has become a holiday tradition that’s fun for the whole family. The Big Band Grandstand is presented annually by Bob and Jenny Hillis in honor of Bob and Genie Friedman.
The evening kicks off when WMSE DJ Dewey Gill – the man himself – welcomes guests with a special hand-selected DJ set. Then Gunhild Carling, Sweden’s Queen of Swing, takes the stage with her big band backing her. Gunhild plays trombone, bagpipes, trumpet, recorder, and string instruments (such as banjo, ukulele, and harp), and will often showcase all of her skills in one song, while casually breaking into a tap dance or singing. With eleven albums under her belt and thousands of performances, this will indeed be a show of shows!
There is a silent auction that is live online now and includes exciting items like a Green Bay Packers vs. The Lions package provided by our friends at TicketKing, a Film Buff package courtesy Milwaukee Film which includes: Film Director Dual Membership which comes with film festival vouchers and two all-access festival passes, valued at $1,500 and the last bottle of Great Lakes Distillery’s Chicken Shack Rye will be included in a rock’n’roll package! There will also be an in-person raffle for 4 tickets to the Packers vs. Vikings on January 1st at 3:25pm, provided by our friends at TicketKing!
Proceeds from the Big Band Grandstand support the upkeep of WMSE’s studios, digitization of the station’s jazz library, and powers the WMSE Live Jazz stream 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
