The awe-inspiring talent of Gunhild Carling, Sweden’s Queen of Swing, was on full display once again as she graced the stage for a spectacular performance that left the crowd in wonder!

WMSE’s Big Band Grandstand 2023, a cherished holiday tradition now in its 9th year, took place at Turner Hall Ballroom on Sunday, December 3rd at 4 p.m. The event, annually presented by Bob and Jenny Hillis in honor of Bob and Genie Friedman, provided enjoyment for the entire family.

The enchanting evening commenced with a special DJ set by WMSE’s very own Dewey Gill, followed by Gunhild Carling, the virtuoso known for her trombone, bagpipes, trumpet, recorder, and string instrument mastery. Gunhild, with her big band accompaniment, showcased her musical prowess, often combining multiple instruments within a single song, all while effortlessly transitioning into tap dance and vocals.

The event also featured a silent auction boasting enticing items, including Green Bay Packers Tickets courtesy of TicketKing, a Film Buff package from Milwaukee Film comprising Film Director Dual Membership, film festival vouchers, and all-access festival passes valued at $1,500. Additionally, guests could bid for the chance to be a WMSE DJ FOR THE DAY, or win fantastic gift cards from great local restaurants and businesses through the gift tree.

Proceeds from the Big Band Grandstand support the upkeep of WMSE’s studios, digitization of the station’s jazz library, and powers the WMSE Live Jazz stream 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

WMSE’s Big Band Grandstand is supported by: Direct Supply, Locker’s Florist, Beans & Barley, Melt Chocolates, Transfer Pizzeria Cafe, MSOE, and Great Lakes Distillery.
