Friday Night Freak Show – Labyrinth @ Times Cinema
Jan 13 @ 8:00 pm – 11:45 pm

fnfslabWMSE 91.7FM presents a very special Friday Night Freak Show at the Times Cinema. In remembrance of David Bowie’s passing one year ago this month, we present LABYRINTH. DJ spin at 8, movie at 9.

Even if the world hadn’t lost David Bowie, there’s never really a bad time to watch Labyrinth. A dark, twisted fantasy tale about a Goblin King (Bowie) who seeks to steal a baby, the film is beloved by an entire generation. Between Bowie’s incredible screen presence, some fantastic puppet work from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, an early performance by Jennifer Connelly and some great music, it’s easy to see why the film is even more beloved thirty years after its release.

WMSE was the #4 station in the world to spin Bowie’s music in remembrance of his passing. So join us as we celebrate the Star Man with DJ Haven spinning at 8 and the movie shows at 9.

Friday Night Freak Show – The Hunger @ Times Cinema
Jan 12 @ 8:00 pm – 11:45 pm

WMSE 91.7FM and Times Cinema are partnering to bring you another Friday Night Freak Show! David Bowie left this world on January 10th, 2016. On the two year anniversary of this tragic event, we bring you (a possibly immortal?) Bowie by the way of 1983’s THE HUNGER.

DJ spins at 8PM. Film at 9PM. Tickets: http://bit.ly/2BxrnNm

Long before TWILIGHT made it hip to fall in love with a vampire, there was Whitley Streiber’s 1981 novel THE HUNGER, which emphasized the “lust” in bloodlust and equated the vampire’s insatiable appetite with the overpowering, all-consuming desires of junkies to feed their addiction.

If you ever tried re-imagining FLASHDANCE as a horror movie, you can bet it would look exactly like THE HUNGER (coincidentally, both films opened within weeks of each other in April 1983). Gorgeous, gory and ultra-’80s in every respect — check out the cameos by then-rising stars Willem Dafoe, John Pankow and Ann Magnuson — THE HUNGER turns out to be as steamy as it is scary. You get everything from a Deneuve/Bowie tryst in a spacious shower to the celebrated couplings of Sarandon and Deneuve. Scott utilizes his stars to memorable effect, as Deneuve and Bowie’s cool, otherworldly style contrasts tantalizingly with Sarandon’s delicacy (how slyly she rocks that filmy white t-shirt while asking Miriam, “Are you making a pass at me, Mrs. Blaylock?”). Forget Edward and Bella — this is what real supernatural sensuality is all about.

Friday Night Freak Show – The Man Who Fell To Earth (our yearly Bowie tribute) @ Times Cinema
Jan 11 @ 8:00 pm – 11:30 pm

WMSE 91.7FM and the Times Cinema are teaming up to bring you a 4K Restoration of THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, in tribute to the late great David Bowie on the 3 year anniversary of his untimely death. DJ Haven spins at 8PM. Film at 9PM. All tickets are $5.

THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH is a daring exploration of science fiction as an art form. The story of an alien on an elaborate rescue mission provides the launching pad for Nicolas Roeg’s visual tour de force, a formally adventurous examination of alienation in contemporary life. Rock legend David Bowie, in his acting debut, completely embodies the title role, while Candy Clark, Buck Henry, and Rip Torn turn in pitch-perfect supporting performances. The film’s hallucinatory vision was obscured in the initial American theatrical release, which deleted nearly twenty minutes of crucial scenes and details. We’re presenting Roeg’s full uncut version.

WMSE’s Friday Night Freak Show – Labyrinth – honoring David Bowie! @ Times Cinema
Jan 20 @ 6:30 pm – 11:00 pm

David Bowie left the world a little less magical back in 2016. The WMSE 91.7FM Friday Night Freak Show hopes to bring a little of that magic back into your lives with a special screening of LABYRINTH. Doors open at 6:30 with a Bowie-heavy DJ spin by Haven, and the film starts at 7:30. So, get ready to dance, magic dance! In Jim Henson’s epic fantasy we meet beloved creatures of all sorts, whether your preference is the large and clumsy Ludo, valiant Sir Didymus, duplicitous Hoggle or even “just a worm” as Sarah looks to conquer the impossible labyrinth that Jareth has constructed, with her seemingly ambivalent baby brother at its center. David Bowie has always looked good, but for many of us he will always be the sadistic Goblin King, toying with crystal balls and climbing M.C. Escher stairs. Behold the magic and wonder once again!
